The anti-ragging cell of the Medical College Hospital (MCH) has decided to debar two postgraduate trainee (PGT) doctors in the orthopaedic surgery unit of the hospital from all academic and clinical activities for two months on charge of ragging their juniors.

The cell, headed by the MCH principal Prof (Dr) I Biswas, in its meeting held today has also decided to cancel all kinds of leaves for two months. The two PGTs have also been asked to come to attend the hospital every day to look after patients-care related services like building up patient-doctor relationship issues, cleanliness inside the hospital premises and keeping watch on quality and standard of diets served to patients daily.

They would talk to patients in presence of Prof (Dr) Anjan Adhikari, medical supercum-vice-principal (MSVP) and dean seeking to know about healthcare satisfaction level from both indoor and outdoor patients every day. The anti-ragging cell has also decided not to enter into orthopaedic surgery unit for two months.

The MCH authorities will withdraw their punishments once the former are satisfied with their duties in connection with hospital-allied healthcare issues. A senior member of the cell said that their punishment period might be extended further if the behaviour of the two accused PGTs is unsatisfactory. “We may also take action against faculty members if they remain silent even after getting information about any allegation of ragging in their respective departments in future.

Teachers can’t avoid their responsibilities,” he said, requesting anonymity. Earlier, the MCH authorities had set up a committee to investigate allegations of ragging by two doctors at the teaching hospital. It found some of the charges true, an official at the hospital said. The inquiry committee had submitted its report to the principal of the college on Friday.

Two doctors, junior residents in a department at the hospital, had in a letter addressed to the principal on 8 January alleged that two of their seniors had physically and mentally abused them.
