A 60-year-old man died in the wee hours on Thursday after he accidentally fell into a swimming pool. Karuna Mondal, a resident of Goabagan Street, is believed to have died after drowning when he slipped into the swimming pool in Hedua Park. Locals saw his body floating in the water at around 5.30 a.m. and informed Burtolla police station. His body was fished out with the help of locals and sent to R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital where he was declared brought dead by the doctors. Police have sent his body for an autopsy.

“He was a habitual drunkard. He was so addicted to alcohol that he never went to work and would often squander money on liquor. He left home yesterday morning and did not return home. He frequently used to spend nights at Hedua pool to catch fish. I did not suspect anything as he frequently used to stay outside at night,” said Renubala Mondal, the wife of the deceased. “We got information about his death at around 6 in the morning and I have called my son who had left for Jharkhand only yesterday morning,” she added.

“My father regularly went to the Hedua swimming pool as he used to catch fish there. He never went to work and wasted his time drinking. We have repeatedly asked him to stop drinking but to no avail. I had also taken him to my house at Madhyamgram three months ago but he did not stay there for long. I got the news and have come with my husband,” said Radharani Ghosh, one of the five daughters of the deceased.

“The man somehow managed to get inside the pool compound at around midnight. He is suspected to have scaled the boundary wall surrounding the pool in an inebriated condition. He used to frequent the spot to catch fish at night,” said a police officer. Investigation is on to probe the death though the family has not registered any complaint.
