The Income Tax department conducted raids at the residence of Trinamul Congress leader Swarup Biswas, today.

Swarup is brother of cabinet minister Aroop Biswas. The raids are in connection with the allegations of extortion, tax evasion and unaccounted wealth involving two construction companies. Raids are underway at five locations in Kolkata, including Swarup’s residence in the city’s New Alipore area and his wife Jui Biswas’s office. Jui Biswas is a local Trinamul Congress councillor and also a party spokesperson. Of the five locations being raided, three are in Kolkata’s Parnasree area, include the office of one of the construction companies.

Sources said that while probing the construction companies, Swarup Biswas’s name had surfaced following which the raids were conducted today.

A team of I-T sleuths, escorted by Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) personnel reached the residence of Swarup Biswas at New Alipore in South Kolkata.

The Biswas couple was questioned and documents discovered during the raids were examined by the officials of the Income Tax department. As the brother of a minister, Swarup is said to have immense influence on the Bengali film industry in South Kolkata, from where Aroop is the legislator. He also heads an association of technicians from the Bengali film industry. The officials are tight-lipped about the exact reasons behind their raids at Biswas’ residence and at the offices of two real estate development entities, Eden Real Estate and Multicon Real Estate.

Sources said that there are complaints of fund defalcation against both these entities but there is no indication from the officials if Biswas has any connection with them.
