A routine morning cleaning at a private hospital in Kerala led to the discovery of a newborn’s body inside a bucket in the washroom, prompting a police investigation into suspected abandonment.
The infant was found by cleaning staff at Fatima Hospital in Akambadam on Monday. Investigators are now examining the movements of a young woman who had arrived at the hospital hours earlier with heavy bleeding.

The body was found when members of the hospital’s cleaning staff entered the washroom during their regular duties.

Police were informed immediately. Officers inspected the premises and recorded statements from doctors and other hospital employees.
The exact cause of the newborn’s death has not yet been established. Police said it would be determined through a post-mortem examination and further investigation.
Hospital authorities said a young woman from Chaliyar arrived with her relatives at around 11 pm on the preceding night.
She complained of heavy bleeding. The duty nurse advised her family to take her immediately to Nilambur District Hospital for further treatment.
Before the transfer, the woman went to the washroom to change her clothes. She emerged after some time and was subsequently taken to the district hospital in an ambulance.
Based on the preliminary inquiry, police suspect that the woman may have deliberately left the newborn inside the washroom.
No conclusion has yet been reached on how or when the infant died.
Police have registered a case and begun a detailed investigation.
