A 20-year-old NEET aspirant allegedly died by suicide after failing to clear the medical entrance examination in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar district. Police said a suicide note was recovered from the spot, in which she reportedly referred to her inability to qualify for the examination and the expectations of her family. A case has been registered, and an investigation is underway.
According to police, the deceased, Surla Harika Rao Naidu, was a resident of Adawal Khaspara under the Bodhghat police station limits. She had been preparing for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for the past three years with the dream of becoming a doctor.

Police said that the examination results were declared on Thursday night. After having dinner with her family, she reportedly checked her result on her laptop before going to her room. At around 3.30 am, her mother found the door of the room open and discovered her hanging. Family members immediately brought her down and rushed her to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead after examination.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the student had appeared for the NEET examination thrice but failed to qualify on each occasion. Police suspect that disappointment over this year’s result and the resulting mental distress may have led to the incident. The suicide note recovered from the room is also being examined as part of the investigation.
Trainee DSP Sumit Chandra said that a police team reached the spot after receiving information about the incident. The body was sent for post-mortem examination and later handed over to the family. “Prima facie, it is a case of suicide. The student was under stress after failing to clear the NEET examination. Statements of her family members and other people close to her are being recorded, and further investigation is in progress,” he said.
