Former Intelligence Bureau (IB) Special Director Anurag Kumar has been appointed as the new Commissioner of Delhi Police, with the Centre directing incumbent Satish Golcha to report to the office of the Lieutenant Governor for his next posting.
The appointment brings a leadership change at the helm of one of the country’s largest metropolitan police forces. Kumar, a 1994-batch IPS officer of the AGMUT cadre, will assume charge with immediate effect, according to a Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) order issued on Friday.

Golcha, a 1992-batch AGMUT cadre officer, has been asked to report to the Delhi Lieutenant Governor after Kumar takes charge. Although his tenure was scheduled to continue until April 2027, the latest order reassigns him before the end of his term.
Anurag Kumar returns to AGMUT cadre after Intelligence Bureau stint
Kumar’s appointment comes a day after the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved his repatriation from the Intelligence Bureau to his parent AGMUT cadre for a period of three years, relaxing the IPS tenure policy.
The MHA order said, “With the approval of the Competent Authority, Anurag Kumar, IPS (AGMUT:1994), is hereby appointed as Commissioner of Police, Delhi, with effect from the date of assumption of charge and until further orders.”

Experience spans Delhi Police and Intelligence Bureau
Before moving to the Intelligence Bureau, Kumar served as Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in multiple Delhi Police districts.
He has nearly 32 years of experience across policing, administration and intelligence. In the Intelligence Bureau, Kumar worked on matters related to internal security and counter-terrorism, besides handling other sensitive assignments.
An engineering graduate, Kumar was awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2010 and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2016.
Will head one of India’s largest metropolitan police forces
As Delhi Police Commissioner, Kumar will lead one of the country’s largest metropolitan police forces. The organisation is responsible for law and order, crime prevention, traffic management and security across the national capital, including the protection of key government institutions, constitutional authorities, foreign missions and major public events.
The order, signed by Under Secretary Rakesh Kumar Singh, also directed Satish Golcha to report to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi for further posting once Kumar assumes charge.
