The passengers were safely deboarded from the compartments after the train applied its emergency brakes and came to a halt. No injuries were reported in the incident.
According to passengers, the train had left Dhanbad for Howrah on Thursday afternoon.
The first signs of technical snag were seen near Panagarh and later the locomotive pilot applied the emergency brakes near Talit. It was then that smoke and flames were spotted under the coach next to the locomotive.
“We saw smoke and fire coming out from beneath the coach and everyone got scared,” a passenger said.
Railway staff stopped the train near Talit station. Railway personnel brought the blazes under control in about 20 minutes using fire extinguishers.
Senior Eastern Railway officials said the incident was triggered by “brake binding” in the coach just behind the engine near Talit.
The problem was noticed around 7:45 PM. Following repairs, the train resumed its journey toward its destination at around 8:20 PM.
Railway officials said an investigation is underway.
