The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken cognisance of a complaint submitted by the Dr Ambedkar Jan Kalyan Samiti, alleging serious human rights violations during a peaceful public demonstration in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh.
According to the complaint, the demonstration was organised to demand justice in a murder case. It has been alleged that the local police resorted to an unprovoked and brutal lathi-charge on the peaceful protesters, leaving several participants with serious injuries.

Taking note of the seriousness of the allegations concerning the use of force against peaceful demonstrators and the possible violation of their human rights, the NHRC Bench, headed by Member Priyank Kanoongo, has issued notices to the Director General of Police, Uttar Pradesh, and the Principal Secretary (Home), Government of Uttar Pradesh, seeking a detailed report on the incident.

The Commission has sought information regarding the circumstances that led to the use of force, the injuries sustained by the protesters, the justification for the police action, the medical assistance provided to the injured, and the steps taken to ensure accountability if any excesses are found.
