Questions have emerged over the future of Union Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu after the completion of his Rajya Sabha tenure, though constitutional provisions allow him to continue in office for up to six months even without being a member of Parliament.
The discussion gained momentum after Union Minister of State George Kurian stepped down following the end of his Rajya Sabha term on June 21. Kurian was not renominated by the BJP for another term in the Upper House. Bittu, whose Rajya Sabha tenure also concluded on the same date, was similarly not renominated.

Bittu had entered the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan, but the party chose to field senior BJP leader Tarun Chugh for the vacant seat instead. The development has led to speculation about whether Bittu will continue as a minister in the Union government.
However, political observers believe an immediate change is unlikely. With Punjab expected to head for Assembly elections in the coming months, the BJP may prefer continuity in its political strategy in the state rather than making changes to Bittu’s ministerial responsibilities at this stage.
Under Article 75(5) of the Constitution, a person can serve as a Union minister without being a member of either House of Parliament for a maximum period of six months. During this period, the individual must secure membership of the Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha. Failing that, the minister is required to relinquish office.
In Bittu’s case, the six-month period would end around December 21. If he is not elected or nominated to either House of Parliament before then, he would have to step down from the Council of Ministers in accordance with constitutional provisions.
Bittu has not publicly expressed disappointment over not being renominated to the Rajya Sabha. However, he had earlier hinted at a possible return to active politics in Punjab, stating that after spending nearly 17 years in Parliament through both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, he intended to focus more on political work in the state. He had also remarked that he had already packed his belongings in Delhi in preparation for a larger role in Punjab.
For now, there has been no official indication from either the BJP or the Union government regarding any change in Bittu’s ministerial position.
