The BJP on Friday accused the Congress of being responsible for the declining relevance of the INDIA bloc, claiming that the alliance is facing an existential crisis due to the opposition party’s “opportunistic and self-serving politics”.

BJP Rajya Sabha MP Sudhanshu Trivedi’s remarks came following the Congress candidate’s defeat in the Rajya Sabha elections in Jharkhand despite the Congress-JMM alliance enjoying a comfortable majority in the state Assembly, a setback that triggered a blame game among INDIA alliance partners.

Trivedi said the alliance had effectively weakened long ago and that the Rajya Sabha result was merely a reflection of those unresolved differences, responding to the alliance’s future at a press conference.

According to Trivedi, the INDIA bloc was losing relevance due to growing internal discord and infighting “The INDIA bloc is fast losing relevance. There is nothing left about ‘India’ in the alliance. After its fallout with the DMK, the Congress’ only ally in South India is the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML),” he said, urging the Congress leadership to introspect on why coalitions led by the party often fail to endure.

Trivedi claimed the Rajya Sabha poll outcome in Jharkhand was a consequence of tensions that had surfaced during the Bihar Assembly elections. “A JMM minister had stated on record that the Hemant Soren-led party was betrayed by its alliance partner during the Bihar elections after being denied the promised share of seats,” he said.
