The investigation into the 2015 Behbal Kalan firing incident has taken a fresh turn, with former Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Giani Raghbir Singh, recording his statement before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the case.

His deposition is expected to add a significant dimension to the ongoing investigation and could potentially increase legal and political challenges for Shiromani Akali Dal president and former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal.

According to sources, Giani Raghbir Singh informed the SIT that Sukhbir Singh Badal had acknowledged his responsibility in connection with the Behbal Kalan firing episode during his appearance before Sri Akal Takht Sahib. The former Jathedar stated that the admission was made publicly during the proceedings at the highest temporal seat of the Sikhs and that the interaction was video-recorded.

He further told investigators that the recording remains preserved in the official records of Sri Akal Takht Sahib and could serve as an important piece of evidence in the ongoing probe.

In his statement, Giani Raghbir Singh alleged that the firing on unarmed and peaceful protesters at Behbal Kalan was carried out as part of a conspiracy. He said the incident had deeply hurt the sentiments of the Sikh community and stressed that the truth behind the episode must be brought before the public.

Sources indicated that the SIT may now examine the statement of the former Jathedar along with the video recording and other available evidence. Investigators are expected to assess whether the material corroborates the claims made before the probe team.

The Behbal Kalan firing incident occurred on October 14, 2015, when police opened fire on protesters demonstrating against incidents of sacrilege in Punjab. Two people were killed, and several others sustained injuries in the firing, which sparked widespread outrage and became one of the most contentious issues in the state’s political and religious discourse.

The SIT has already filed charge sheets against several police officials in connection with the case. Proceedings related to the matter are currently underway in a Chandigarh district court, while the investigation continues.
