The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Friday castigated the United States for what it called “illegal” and “imperialist” threats aimed at Cuba, accusing Washington of seeking to destabilise the socialist country and target veterans of the Cuban Revolution.

‎In a resolution passed unanimously at its ongoing Central Committee meeting in New Delhi, the CPI(M) condemned a recent indictment announced by the US Department of Justice against Cuban leader Raul Castro.

‎The party described the charges as “shocking and illegal,” claiming they relied on “lies and manipulation” tied to the 1996 downing of aircraft operated by the Miami-based group Brothers to the Rescue in Cuban airspace.

‎“The US Department of Justice is now reviving this case from nearly 30 years ago against Raul Castro, 94 years of age, one of the most respected leaders of the Cuban Revolution,” the resolution read. “This is a cynical political move without any legal basis and clearly reflects imperialism’s failure to break the will of the Cuban people.”

‎The CPI(M) alleged that Washington was escalating pressure on Cuba because of its socialist system and pursuing a regime change agenda. Citing remarks attributed to US President Donald Trump on May 21, the party claimed the US administration had openly threatened military action against the island.

‎“Imperialism now wants to take recourse to a military intervention in the island, which will lead to a humanitarian catastrophe as the Cubans will defend their country at all costs,” the resolution stated.

‎Reaffirming solidarity, the CPI(M) said it stood with “the people of Cuba and the leadership of the Cuban Revolution that has stayed steadfast and united in the most challenging times.”

‎The party also urged Indians to speak out against what it called an affront to Raul Castro and against “attempts to launch an attack on Cuba.”

‎US-Cuba ties have been strained since the 1959 Cuban Revolution led by Fidel Castro. Washington’s long-standing economic embargo on Havana continues to draw international criticism, with India among the countries that have repeatedly backed UN resolutions calling for its end.
