Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) authorities have started an investigation against a number of properties reportedly owned or co-owned by Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee.

The KMC currently has four-time Trinamool Congress legislator and former member in the previous Mamata Banerjee-led Cabinet, Firhad Hakim, as its Mayor.

Notices have been served under Section Section 400(1) of the KMC Act 1980 that allows owners of allegedly illegal constructions an opportunity to appear before civic authorities and present their case. These notices have been issued to 17 properties allegedly owned or co-owned by Abhishek Banerjee in areas within the KMC’s jurisdiction, IANS reported.

Also, the KMC authorities have pasted the copies of the notices on the walls of such properties.

Under the scanner are two residences of Abhishek Banerjee – one at 188A Harish Mukherjee Road and another at nearby 121 Kalighat Road.

For the property at Harish Mukherjee Road, a notice was served to a corporate entity Leaps & Bounds Private Limited, which is said to be owned by the Banerjee-family. Also, for the property at Kalighat Road, the notice was served to Abhishek Banerjee’s mother Lata Banerjee.

Both properties are in Kolkata and quite close to former chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence at Kalighat.

Ever since Mamata Banerjee-led TMC came to power, several parties, including CPI(M), Congress and the BJP had voiced concern over a large number of properties being registered in the names of different Banerjee-family members. At that time, Mamata Banerjee rubbished such allegations as a mud-slinging exercise by the Opposition.
