A 26-year-old Indian tourist has died while three others remain under medical care after members of a group suddenly lost consciousness at a cafe in Thailand’s Phuket province, authorities said on Tuesday.

The Indian Embassy in Thailand said it is in touch with Thai authorities and is closely monitoring the case, which took place on May 9 in the Kamala Beach area of Kathu district.

The incident has triggered an investigation by local police as officials attempt to determine what caused four members of the group to collapse one after another inside the cafe late on Friday night. While one of the tourists later died in hospital, the remaining three are reported to be in stable condition.

In a statement posted on X, the Indian Embassy said, “The Embassy has been in touch with the Thai authorities and closely monitoring the incident in which four Indian tourists fell unconscious in Phuket on 9 May 2026 and were subsequently hospitalized for treatment.”

“Our deepest condolences for the death of one young Indian tourist among them. The Embassy officials are in contact with the family of the deceased to extend all support in this hour of grief. We remain in contact with the relevant Thai authorities who are looking into the incident, and also following the health situation of the others,” it added.

What happened at the Phuket cafe?

According to local officials, emergency teams were called to a cafe near Kamala Beach after several Indian tourists reportedly collapsed on the premises.

Security personnel at the cafe told investigators that five Indian men had arrived together around 11 pm on Friday. The group was identified as Aman Agarwal, Rahul Agrawal, another man also named Rahul Agrawal, Kushagra Agarwal, and Aryan Verma.

Officials said four members of the group began losing consciousness one by one without any immediately visible reason, following which cafe staff alerted emergency services.

Three tourists were taken to Patong Hospital, while another was shifted to Thalang Hospital, the Bangkok Post reported.

Police launch investigation after tourist’s death

Hospital authorities later informed police that two of the patients had slipped into a coma and were transferred to Vachira Phuket Hospital for advanced treatment. They were identified as Kushagra Agarwal and one of the two men named Rahul Agrawal.

Police said Kushagra Agarwal later died during treatment on Saturday. The condition of the other three tourists has since stabilised.

Thai authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
