Congress general secretary K C Venugopal on Sunday criticised the Narendra Modi-led government over rising concerns related to India’s energy security amid the ongoing Iran-US conflict, accusing the Prime Minister of failing to prepare adequate contingency measures despite the crisis continuing for months.

‎In a post on social media platform X, Venugopal alleged that the Centre had shown a lack of planning in dealing with the economic fallout of the conflict and warned that ordinary citizens could be pushed into hardship due to rising fuel-related pressures.

‎“3 months into the Iran-US war and PM Modi is still clueless about ensuring India’s energy security,” the Congress leader said.
‎He further accused the government of placing political considerations above governance priorities.

“It is shameless, reckless and downright immoral that the PM is pushing the common citizen into inconvenience, instead of building contingencies to ensure our economy is unaffected by this global crisis,” Venugopal said in the post.

‎Stepping up his attack, the Congress leader claimed that the Centre’s alleged inaction could lead to serious economic consequences. “When elections and petty politics are the sole priority of the PM, the end result is an impending economic catastrophe,” he said.

‎Venugopal also urged the government to take immediate measures to safeguard fuel supplies and shield citizens from the impact of global disruptions. “The PM and his government must make all necessary arrangements to ensure we have ample fuel reserves and no citizen faces any hardship as a result of their lack of planning,” he added.

‎The remarks come amid heightened global concerns over energy markets and crude oil supply chains following the prolonged tensions and conflict involving Iran and the United States. India, which imports a significant portion of its crude oil requirements, remains vulnerable to fluctuations in global energy prices and disruptions in supply routes.

‎The Congress party has repeatedly targeted the Centre over inflation, fuel prices and economic management, with Opposition leaders alleging that the government has failed to adequately prepare for emerging international crises affecting domestic consumers.
