Vidya Balan recently experienced a wave of emotions as she finally watched her long-lost film ‘The Last Tenant’. The movie, which she shot for around 25 years ago, has now been released on YouTube after remaining unseen for decades.
The actress shared that she watched the film for the first time only recently, even though she had worked on it many years ago. The project had been completed but, for unknown reasons, it never got a proper release and was quietly shelved for years.

Its sudden arrival on digital platforms brought back many forgotten memories from that time in her life.
Vidya described the moment as unexpected and emotional.
A difficult phase in her early career
Along with the memories of the film, Vidya also recalled a tough period in her professional life. She revealed that ‘The Last Tenant’ was shot during a time when she was facing repeated setbacks in the industry.
She mentioned that her first Malayalam film ‘Chakram’ was also shelved. Around the same period, she was replaced in nearly a dozen films over a span of three years.
This phase, she said, was emotionally draining, and she eventually chose to move on by not thinking about those projects anymore.
Vidya explained that she had “shoved it under the carpet” in order to forget that difficult stretch, as nothing she worked on seemed to move forward at the time.
Irrfan Khan’s natural screen presence
One of the strongest memories Vidya shared from ‘The Last Tenant’ was working with Irrfan Khan. She recalled how excited she was to inform her sister from the set that she was acting alongside him.
At that time, Irrfan had already impressed her deeply. She described him as “the most natural actor,” someone who never gave a false tone or forced performance. Even after watching the film again years later, she felt the same honesty and ease in his acting.
Vidya said his presence on screen remained effortless and real.
Memories, regrets and a final tribute
Vidya also spoke about her regret that she did not get more opportunities to work with Irrfan Khan before his passing. She mentioned that there were a couple of films where they were going to act opposite each other. But those projects never happened for various reasons.
With ‘The Last Tenant’ finally released, she felt a sense of closure and gratitude. She thanked director Sarthak Dasgupta for bringing the film to the audience after so many years. She said it felt like their “stars finally aligned.”
Vidya also fondly referred to Irrfan as her fellow Capricorn while remembering him.
