There are some films that don’t just stay on screen. They linger in conversations, memories. And ‘Piku’ is one of them. On a day filled with emotion, filmmaker Shoojit Sircar went back in time and shared a glimpse of what made the film so special: the playful spirit of Irrfan Khan.
Marking Irrfan’s sixth death anniversary, Shoojit posted a behind-the-scenes video from the 2015 film Piku.

A throwback full of laughter, not lines
The video shared by Shoojit Sircar isn’t your typical polished montage. It’s messy, warm, and full of life. Just like Irrfan himself. In the clip, Irrfan can be seen joking around on set, pulling off light-hearted “masti” between takes, and keeping the energy alive.
Shoojit captioned it simply: “Dekho kaise pyaar se masti kar raha hai… memories from Piku.”
The film also starred Amitabh Bachchan and Deepika Padukone.
Why ‘Piku’ still feels so personal
At its heart, ‘Piku’ wasn’t a loud film. It told a quiet, relatable story. Piku, an independent architect, shares a complicated bond with her ageing father Bhaskor Banerjee. They argue over the smallest things, yet remain connected.
A road trip to Kolkata becomes the backdrop where their relationship slowly unfolds. It’s not dramatic in the usual sense. It’s real. Messy, funny, frustrating, and full of love.
The film also featured strong performances from Moushumi Chatterjee, Jisshu Sengupta, and Raghubir Yadav.
And while everyone brought something memorable, it was Amitabh Bachchan’s performance that made history. He won his fourth National Film Award for Best Actor at the 63rd National Film Awards.
Remembering Irrfan: a life beyond the screen
Irrfan Khan was in a league of his own. With a career spanning over three decades, he worked across Indian, British, American films.
He received several honours, including a National Film Award, an Asian Film Award, and the Padma Shri.
In 2018, Irrfan revealed that he had been diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer. He went to the UK for treatment and returned to India in early 2019. But his health remained fragile.
In April 2020, he was admitted for a colon infection linked to the disease. A day later, he passed away at the age of 53.
Even after his death, his work continued to reach audiences. He was seen posthumously in ‘Murder at Teesri Manzil 302’ alongside Ranvir Shorey, Deepal Shaw, and Lucky Ali.
His final full release was ‘Angrezi Medium’, directed by Homi Adajania. The film also featured Radhika Madan, Deepak Dobriyal, and Kareena Kapoor Khan.
