Tamil Nadu’s post-election stalemate deepened on Thursday as All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) chief Edappadi K Palaniswami reportedly assured party MLAs that “good things will happen”, even as the DMK authorised MK Stalin to take “urgent political decisions” and speculation intensified over possible resignations by TVK legislators.

Four days after the Assembly election results were declared, the state remains without a clear path to government formation. With actor-politician C Joseph Vijay-led TVK emerging as the single largest party but still falling short of a majority, multiple political scenarios are now being discussed behind closed doors.

Scenario 1: AIADMK senses an opening despite numbers gap

The AIADMK camp appeared increasingly confident after Palaniswami met party MLAs at a luxury resort in neighbouring Puducherry late Thursday night.

According to party sources, the legislators elected Palaniswami as leader of the AIADMK Legislature Party and submitted signed letters endorsing his leadership.

Reports said the AIADMK chief asked MLAs to remain patient, assuring them that “good things will happen” while expressing confidence that the party would eventually form the next government in Tamil Nadu.

The developments have fuelled speculation of possible political realignments in the coming days.

Of AIADMK’s 47 MLAs, around 28 are currently staying at the Puducherry resort amid reports of intense negotiations and concerns over poaching attempts by rival camps. AMMK MLA S Kamaraj, who won from Mannargudi, is also said to be staying with the AIADMK group.

The resort booking has reportedly been extended for seven days, while MLAs have allegedly been advised not to leave the premises without prior approval.

Scenario 2: DMK keeps options open to avoid another election

In Chennai, the DMK Legislature Party, chaired by MK Stalin, passed four resolutions as the party weighed its next move in the fractured political landscape.

One of the resolutions sharply criticised the Congress for extending support to TVK after contesting the election as part of the DMK-led alliance.

The party also granted Stalin full authority to take “urgent political decisions” aimed at ensuring the formation of a “stable government” and preventing Tamil Nadu from being pushed into another election.

The resolution has triggered fresh political chatter over whether the DMK could explore unconventional arrangements if the deadlock continues.

Scenario 3: TVK under pressure despite emerging as largest party

Even though TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats, the party has so far failed to secure the numbers required to form the government.

The uncertainty deepened further after Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar reportedly indicated that any party or alliance capable of demonstrating majority support would be invited to form the government.

Reports also suggested that TVK legislators may consider mass resignations if any understanding emerges between the DMK and AIADMK.

The possibility of such resignations has added another layer of uncertainty to an already volatile political situation in the state.
