Humayun Kabir moves Calcutta HC: After the dust of election counting settled in West Bengal, a new kind of noise has reached the courts. Politics has now shifted from booths and rallies to legal corridors, as allegations of violence and retaliation start piling up from different districts.

Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) Chairman Humayun Kabir has now gone to the Calcutta High Court. On Wednesday, he filed a petition asking the court to step in and stop what he calls post-poll violence in West Bengal.

He has also requested that the court ensure safety for his party workers and order an unbiased investigation into the incidents being reported.

Claims of targeted violence in Murshidabad

Kabir has specifically pointed to Murshidabad district. According to him, violence broke out there soon after the West Bengal Assembly election results were declared on May 4.

He has alleged that houses of AJUP workers were attacked and vandalised. Party supporters, he said, were also beaten up in planned and politically motivated incidents.

The petition claims that this is not random trouble but organised violence aimed at his party’s workers in the region.

The complaint does not stop at post-result incidents. Kabir’s lawyer told the court that the AJUP leader himself was attacked earlier during the first phase of polling on April 23.

His car was allegedly damaged by unidentified miscreants. Along with that, party workers were also reportedly harassed during the election period.

A key part of the allegation is that police did not take any complaint seriously, according to the lawyer. Kabir has argued that repeated inaction by authorities has made the situation worse and pushed him to seek court intervention.

He has asked the court to direct immediate steps for maintaining peace and to order a fair probe into all incidents.

Election results and widening violence across Bengal

The petition comes at a tense political moment. The West Bengal Assembly election results were announced on May 4. Kabir himself won from both Rejinagar and Nowda seats in Murshidabad district.

The results also showed a major political shift, with the BJP winning 207 seats and forming the government, ending what is described as the 15-year rule of the Trinamool Congress, which secured 80 seats.

Since the results, reports of violence have surfaced from multiple districts. In areas like South 24 Parganas, there are allegations of attacks on Trinamool Congress workers and vandalism of party offices as well.
