Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said the Assembly election verdict broadly aligned with what he had anticipated, revealing that he had written down his own assessment on April 9, the day polling concluded.

The BJP-led alliance has secured a clear mandate in the 2026 Assembly elections, strengthening its hold on the state and pushing the opposition, particularly the Congress, to the margins. The BJP won 82 seats, while the Congress managed 19.

The Chief Minister expressed gratitude to voters, saying he was “truly humbled” by the verdict that has brought the BJP back to power for a third consecutive term in the state.

‘Mandate for development, identity’: Sarma on poll outcome

Sarma said the result reflects public trust in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership as well as the state government’s governance model. He added that the mandate endorses the government’s focus on development and protection of Assam’s identity.

Speaking to reporters after the results, the Chief Minister termed the outcome a “historic mandate” and said the electorate had once again backed the party’s agenda.

“The people of Assam have given their blessings once again. This mandate is for development, good governance, and for securing the identity of the state,” he said.

He also credited the government’s work in governance, infrastructure, and socio-economic sectors, saying these efforts had resonated across regions and communities.

The BJP-led NDA’s strong showing consolidates its position in Assam politics, even as the opposition struggles to regain ground.
