Actor-turned-politician C Joseph Vijay has delivered a political upset in Tamil Nadu, with his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerging as the single largest force in the 2026 Assembly elections. But the debutant outfit now faces a tougher test: finding enough numbers to form the government.
The verdict signals a break from nearly six decades of dominance by Dravidian majors, opening up a new phase in the state’s politics even as the final outcome hinges on post-poll negotiations.

TVK, contesting its first election, has won 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly. The halfway mark stands at 118, leaving the party 10 seats short of a simple majority. The gap could widen slightly due to procedural factors within the House.
Vijay has secured victories from both Perambur and Tiruchy East, but he will have to vacate one seat, bringing the effective tally down by one. In addition, one MLA will be appointed Speaker. Since the Speaker does not vote in a confidence motion except in the case of a tie, the party’s voting strength reduces further.
Numbers game: Why TVK needs outside support
With these adjustments, TVK will need the backing of at least 12 additional legislators to comfortably prove its majority on the floor of the House. The fragmented mandate has placed smaller parties and alliances in a decisive position.
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led bloc has returned with scattered numbers. The Congress has won six seats, while Left parties, Communist Party of India and Communist Party of India (Marxist), have secured two seats each. Other players are also in the mix. The Indian Union Muslim League and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi have managed to secure representation in the Assembly, adding to the fragmented verdict.
On the other side, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led front has come back with modest numbers. Its allies, including the Pattali Makkal Katchi and the Bharatiya Janata Party, have picked up only a few seats.
For TVK, the path to power does not necessarily require a full alliance. Even support from a few of these smaller parties or a section of alliance partners could help it cross the majority mark.
Governor’s next move under watch
The focus now shifts to Raj Bhavan, where RN Ravi is expected to begin the government formation process.
The Governor may invite Vijay to stake a claim and prove his majority on the Assembly floor or seek letters of support from parties willing to back TVK. If the party fails to demonstrate numbers, the Governor could turn to the second-largest party, the DMK, to explore its options.
If no formation is possible, Tamil Nadu could face President’s Rule, followed by fresh elections within six months.
