Bengal elections are over; next up is the big fight in Uttar Pradesh, and the political rumblings have already started. Loni’s BJP MLA Nand Kishor Gurjar on Saturday called for changing the name of Ghaziabad to Maharaja Agrasen Nagar.
Gurjar, speaking at a local event on Saturday, said the name reminded him of the founder of the city, Ghaziuddin II, who was a “despot” who ripped off the people.

“Ghaziuddin was a despot. Even after 78 years of Independence, our district carrying his name is unfortunate. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has re-established Indian culture to its glory by renaming Allahabad and Faizabad. In this context, we demand that the name of Ghaziabad be changed to Maharaja Agrasen Nagar,” Gurjar said.
Gurjar underscored the greatness of Maharaja Agrasen. “The works of social welfare done by Maharaja Agrasen are notable. This is all the more reason for a change of name of Ghaziabad after the great personality. I appeal that all public representatives of the district come and join us in our demand.”
A writ petition in this regard has also been filed, and the High Court has left the decision to the state government, Gurjar added. Ghaziabad was founded by Ghaziuddin II, a minister of the Mughal emperor Muhammad Shah. Founded in 1740, it was initially called Ghaziuddinnagar but was later shortened to Ghaziabad in 1864.
