In a move aimed at enhancing voter convenience and ensuring smoother polling operations, the Election Commission of India has approved the creation of 4,660 auxiliary polling stations across West Bengal ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.

The decision comes in response to concerns over overcrowding at existing polling booths, particularly in areas where the number of registered voters exceeds 1,200 per station. By setting up additional auxiliary booths, the Commission seeks to reduce long queues and waiting times, making the voting process more accessible and efficient for citizens.

“Ensuring a comfortable and hassle-free voting experience for every elector remains our top priority,” an ECI official said. “The addition of auxiliary polling stations will significantly ease the burden on high-density booths.”

In addition to the new polling stations, the Commission has also approved the relocation of 321 existing polling booths. These changes are intended to address logistical challenges and improve accessibility, particularly for voters in remote or densely populated regions.

“With the shifting of certain polling stations, we are addressing issues related to distance, connectivity, and voter accessibility,” the official added. “Our focus is on ensuring that no voter is inconvenienced on polling day.”

With these changes, the total number of polling stations in West Bengal, including auxiliary booths, has risen to 85,379. This marks a substantial increase in the state’s polling infrastructure and reflects the Commission’s ongoing efforts to strengthen electoral preparedness.

The expansion comes as part of broader measures undertaken by the ECI to ensure free, fair, and inclusive elections. Over the years, the Commission has emphasized voter-centric reforms, including better facilities at polling stations, improved security arrangements, and enhanced monitoring mechanisms.

As West Bengal prepares for the Assembly elections, officials expressed confidence that the increased number of polling stations will contribute to higher voter turnout and a more streamlined electoral process.
