A case has been filed against Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay for alleged violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) during a roadshow in Chennai ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

The case was registered at the Peravallur Police Station following a complaint by a monitoring officer. Police said the action was taken based on allegations that election norms were breached during the campaign event.

According to the complaint, Vijay allegedly used around 30 loudspeakers without proper clearance, leading to excessive noise. Authorities also claimed that the roadshow caused major disruption, including blocking the path of an ambulance and creating inconvenience for the public.

Officials further alleged that a gathering of over 5,000 people took part in the event, violating restrictions on crowd size during the election period.

Police have registered the case under multiple sections, including charges related to public nuisance, obstruction of public pathways, and unlawful assembly. Along with Vijay, around 5,000 party workers have also been named in the case.

The controversy follows a large roadshow held by Vijay while filing his nomination from the Perambur constituency. The event drew significant crowds, leading to traffic congestion in parts of the city.

TVK accuses police of bias

Reacting to the case, TVK accused the Chennai Police of failing to provide adequate security and traffic management during the campaign.

In a statement posted on X, the party claimed that despite obtaining permission, there was no proper police protection, making it difficult for their leader’s campaign vehicle to move smoothly between venues.

The party also urged the Election Commission of India to step in and ensure fair treatment.

“The Election Commission must immediately intervene in such one-sided actions by the Chennai City Police and issue instructions to promptly ensure protection and traffic regulation. Swift action must be taken against officials who fail to act accordingly,” TVK added.

Allegations against ruling party

TVK further alleged that state officials were acting in favour of the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. The party claimed that permissions for campaign activities were being selectively granted, putting them at a disadvantage.

“Moreover, refusing permission to the leader of the Tamil Nadu Victory Society while granting one-sided approval only to DMK leader Stalin for open-vehicle campaigning is an act that turns democracy into a mockery. We urge the Election Commission to take immediate action against officials who, in collusion with the DMK government, are sabotaging the government’s responsibilities related to the campaign activities of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam leader and stifling the environment for conducting proper campaigns,” the party said.

Election details

Vijay is contesting from two constituencies, Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East, where he faces candidates from the ruling party.

Tamil Nadu will vote in a single phase on April 23 across all 234 constituencies, with counting scheduled for May 4.
