History beckons as Mumbai Indians open their Indian Premier League 2026 campaign against Kolkata Knight Riders, standing on the brink of becoming the first franchise to reach 300 T20 matches. With the iconic Wankhede Stadium set to host the clash, the five-time champions have both history and a fresh start in sight.
Mumbai will become only the third team overall to cross the 300-match mark in T20 cricket, after Pakistan and Somerset, both with 303 matches.

Among IPL sides, MI trail only Royal Challengers Bengaluru (287), with Kolkata Knight Riders (281) not far behind. Of Mumbai’s tally, 277 matches have come in the IPL across 18 seasons, along with 22 appearances in the now-defunct Champions League Twenty20.
The milestone reflects MI’s sustained dominance in the league, having lifted five IPL titles, in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020, the joint most alongside Chennai Super Kings. Yet, despite their pedigree, a strong start has often eluded them in recent years.
Mumbai last won a season opener in 2012, defeating Chennai Super Kings by eight wickets. Since then, they have managed just four wins in their last 18 opening matches, losing the other 14. Their IPL journey itself began with a defeat, going down to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the inaugural 2008 season.
Over the years, MI have produced some of the league’s most iconic moments, from the lethal death bowling of Lasith Malinga to the explosive finishing of Kieron Pollard, alongside the rise of Indian stars like Jasprit Bumrah and Ishan Kishan.
As they chase a sixth IPL crown, all eyes will now be on Hardik Pandya and his men to see if they can mark this historic milestone with a winning start to their IPL 2026 campaign.
