Tensions in West Asia escalated sharply after Iran accused Israel of carrying out strikes on key nuclear facilities, steel plants, and power infrastructure, with Iran warning of strong retaliation. Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said Israel targeted major industrial and nuclear assets, including two of the country’s largest steel factories, a power plant, and civilian nuclear sites. He warned that Iran would make Israel pay a “heavy price” for the crimes by Tel Aviv.
In a post on X, Araghchi said the attacks come at a sensitive time when diplomatic efforts are underway to de-escalate the conflict in the region. He also criticised Donald Trump, claiming the strikes contradict Washington’s extended deadline for negotiations with Tehran.

Israel confirms strikes on nuclear infrastructure
The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed that it carried out airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities as part of Operation Rising Lion. According to the IDF, the targets included the Arak heavy water plant and a uranium extraction facility in Yazd. The military said these sites were linked to Iran’s nuclear programme and were being used to produce materials required for nuclear weapons.
The IDF stated that the heavy water plant in Arak had not been modified in line with international commitments, allowing for the potential production of weapons-grade plutonium. It added that the strike was aimed at preventing further development in that area.
In a separate statement, the IDF said the strike in Yazd targeted infrastructure critical for producing precursor materials used in uranium enrichment.
Israeli officials maintained that enriched uranium remains a central component in nuclear weapons development, and disrupting such facilities would weaken Iran’s capabilities to obtain the raw material required for these processes.
Strikes extend beyond nuclear sites
Apart from nuclear installations, Iran said Israeli attacks also hit major steel plants and a power station, raising concerns about broader economic and civilian impact.
The targeting of industrial infrastructure marks a significant escalation, as steel production is a key sector in Iran’s economy.
