Highlighting Harichand Thakur’s enduring legacy as a social reformer,
Modi noted that his teachings continue to inspire millions, promoting
social justice, equality, and spiritual devotion. The 19th-century
founder of the Matua movement emphasized upliftment of marginalized
communities — a message that remains a guiding force for generations.

The Prime Minister also praised the Matua community’s rich cultural
traditions, which enhance India’s diverse social and spiritual fabric.
He reaffirmed the central government’s commitment to the welfare and
empowerment of the Matua community over the past decade.
The annual Matua Dharma Mela draws thousands for prayer, devotional
singing, and reflection on the faith’s teachings. Modi’s greetings
come amid the politically charged atmosphere ahead of West Bengal’s
upcoming assembly elections, where the BJP seeks to challenge the
incumbent Trinamool Congress.
