Tom Hardy’s role still under wraps

Studio sources indicate that Tom Hardy, who famously played Eddie Brock in the live-action Venom films, will remain connected to the animated version.

What exactly that involvement looks like is not yet clear. Hardy may return as the voice of the character, but the makers have not confirmed anything so far. With the film still in its early stages, changes are very much possible.

Big box-office history

Critical response to the live-action Venom movies was mixed at best. Even so, the franchise pulled in impressive numbers, earning more than $1.8 billion worldwide across three films.

That commercial strength is likely one of the reasons Sony continues to invest in the character’s future.

Sony Animation backing the project

The film will be produced by Sony Pictures via Sony Pictures Animation, the banner that previously delivered the widely praised Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

Another chapter in that animated Spider-Verse storyline, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is currently expected to arrive in theatres in 2027.

Directors coming off a strong run

Lipovsky and Stein have been gaining momentum in Hollywood following the success of Final Destination Bloodlines, which reportedly collected $317.9 million globally and revived interest in the long-running horror franchise.

The pair are also attached to co-write Gremlins 3 with Chris Columbus directing and producing. Veteran filmmaker Steven Spielberg is on board that project as executive producer. The film is aiming for a 2027 release.
