Suspended Trinamul Congress MLA Humayun Kabir on Wednesday made a sensational claim that the ruling party had approached his family with a proposal to field his son-in-law as its candidate from Lalgola Assembly constituency ahead of the forthcoming state elections.
Mr Kabir, the legislator from Bharatpur, who recently announced the formation of his own political outfit, Janata Unnayan Party, alleged that the proposal was conveyed through a person from Malda, said to be a relative of his in-laws. “On one hand, they are trying to attach my daughter and son-in-law’s properties; on the other, a proposal has been sent to my in-laws to nominate my son-in-law as the Trinamul candidate from Lalgola. Ask the Trinamul how they justify this,” Mr Kabir said.

The suspended MLA further alleged that ever since he floated his new party, the police have become “active” and conducted measurements of properties belonging to his daughter and son-in-law. Recently, in connection with an old narcotics case, police attached multiple properties linked to his daughter and her in-laws, triggering political ripples in the district. Escalating the matter, the land and land reforms department has now issued a show-cause notice to Mr Kabir’s wife, Meera Sultana, seeking details regarding a house in Rejinagar.

The notice reportedly cites allegations of filling up water bodies to construct the property and has sought a reply within seven days on why action should not be initiated. There has been no official reaction yet from the suspended Trinamul MLA regarding the notice.
Mr Kabir, who was suspended from the Trinamul Congress amid internal discord, has declared his intention to contest the Assembly polls under his new banner. Though initial overtures were reportedly made towards the CPI-M and the ISF for a possible alliance, those efforts appear to have come to naught. In a fresh political twist, Mr Kabir also claimed that expelled Trinamul leader Arabul Islam had met him multiple times expressing interest in political collaboration. “He has met me several times and spoken of fighting many battles. First, he has to join the party; then we can talk,” Mr Kabir said.
