As Ayodhya continues to witness a steady rise in pilgrims and tourists from across the country, the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department has taken a focused step to strengthen community-led tourism by empowering local boatmen along the Saryu River.

Recognising boatmen as an integral part of Ayodhya’s traditional livelihood and visitor experience, the department has launched a three-day specialised training programme from January 15 for nearly 60 boatmen engaged in river navigation.

Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh said here on Friday that the initiative aims to ensure that tourism growth translates into direct livelihood opportunities for local communities.

He added that the programme focuses on digital payment systems, storytelling, disaster management and emergency first aid, enabling boatmen to offer safe, informed and culturally rich experiences to visitors.

With Ayodhya now holding national and international attention following the consecration of the Ram Mandir, the Saryu has emerged as a key experiential touchpoint for visitors. The Minister said the objective is to move beyond sightseeing and connect tourism with culture, safety and community participation.

The training is being conducted jointly by the Manyavar Kanshiram Institute of Tourism Management (MKITM) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), reflecting a coordinated approach to capacity building.

During the sessions, trainers from MKITM are guiding boatmen on how local stories, Ram Katha and historical narratives linked to ghats and landmarks can enrich a visitor’s journey. Emphasis is being laid on courteous interaction, clear communication, and responsible conduct with tourists. The SDRF team is providing hands-on training in emergency response, CPR, and basic first aid, ensuring preparedness during river operations.

On completion of the programme, participating boatmen will be issued identity cards, formally recognising them as trained service providers. This, officials said, will enhance trust among visitors and strengthen the professional standing of boatmen.

Minister Jaiveer Singh said that Uttar Pradesh is steadily expanding water tourism in a safe and structured manner, with similar training initiatives being rolled out in other districts as well. He noted that the aim is to ensure that traditional occupations such as boating are not only sustained but elevated, allowing local communities to become confident stakeholders and cultural representatives of the state’s tourism journey.

The training programme was inaugurated by Ayodhya District Magistrate Nikhil Tikaram Funde. Officials from the Tourism Department, MKITM faculty members, and SDRF personnel were present during the inauguration.
