It was a big night for Indian entertainment at the 53rd International Emmy Awards in New York, but the results did not go the way many fans had hoped. Imtiaz Ali’s much-loved film ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’ which had earned two major nominations returned without a win. Still the film, its team, and the Indian audience celebrated the honour of standing among the world’s best.

The International Emmys took place on Monday night in New York (early Tuesday morning in India). ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’ received nomination in the Best TV Movie/Mini-Series category. The competition was tough, with Germany’s ‘Herrhausen: The Banker and the Bomb’, the UK’s ‘Lost Boys and Fairies’, and Chile’s ‘Vencer o Morir (Victory or Death)’ also in the running.

In the end, the trophy went to ‘Lost Boys and Fairies’, a British drama about a gay couple who hope to adopt a child. The film has received international acclaim for its emotional storytelling, and it edged out all other contenders, including India’s entry.

The night also brought another disappointment for fans of actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh. Diljit got a nomination for Best Actor for his role as Punjabi music icon Amar Singh Chamkila. This was a huge moment, as very few Indian performers have received acting nominations at the International Emmys.

Diljit was competing against David Mitchell for ‘Ludwig’, Diego Vásquez for ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’, and Oriol Pla for the Spanish production ‘Yo, adicto (I, Addict)’. Oriol Pla won the award for his honest and emotional performance as a young man battling drug addiction and trying to rebuild his life. His role had already earned great praise in Spain and worldwide, and on Emmy night, he walked away with the top honour.

Although India did not win, ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’ remains a film that connected deeply with audiences. The Netflix movie tells the story of the legendary Punjabi folk musician Amar Singh Chamkila who rose from humble beginnings to become a sensation before he was shot dead in the 1980s. Diljit Dosanjh played Chamkila while Parineeti Chopra portrayed Amarjot Kaur, Chamkila’s wife and singing partner.
