The ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu on Thursday welcomed the Supreme Court verdict making it clear that governors could not indefinitely sit on bills while declining to set a timeline for either the President or the Raj Bhavans.

In a balancing act, the Constitution Bench’s Supreme Court making it clear that Governors could not indefinitely sit on Bills while declining to set a timeline for either the President or the Raj Bhavans, has been welcomed by the DMK, which claimed it as a victory.

Expressing hope that the Tamil Nadu Governor will henceforth carry on his duties in accordance with the Constitution, DMK Parliamentary Party leader Kanimozhi took to ‘X’ and said, “The duty that Constitution has mandated to the Governor is to send the Bills passed by the legislature, elected by the people, in a sealed envelope to Delhi without any delay. This is least demanding work, which the Supreme Court has reiterated.”

The legislature, she said, having the mandate of the people, passed legislation for the welfare of people to protect the rights of the people and their welfare. As such, they should be assented without undue delay, the DMK leader added.

“The easiest and least demanding job in the world is that of the Governor,” she recalled her father and late Chief Minister M Karunanidhi as having said.

The Raj Bhavan under Governor RN Ravi and the Stalin government has been at loggerheads on many issues, including stripping the Governor’s power to appoint Vice Chancellors of State-run universities, among others. He is accused of turning the Raj Bhavan as a platform of RSS propaganda and debunking the Dravidian ideology as dead.

Reacting to the development, DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan said, “The Governor has to assent the Bills passed by the elected legislature. He has been left with only three options – viz, assenting, rejecting and sending it for Presidential reference. Only, if there is anything contrary to the Constitution, he can seek clarification, but can’t reject them since he doesn’t have the power to do so.”

He further pointed out that the Governor is appointed unlike the President, Vice President and the Prime Minister, who are elected.
