16 years after a woman lost her son to electrocution in Odisha’s Puri town, the Orissa High Court has awarded Rs 2 lakh compensation to the bereaved mother while directing the Tata Power Central Odisha Distribution Limited (TPCODL) to pay the ex gratia sum along with interest all through from 2009.

The victim, Gyanakalpa Mishra, while passing by a display board duly installed with power being provided by the TPCODL came in contact with livewire and died of electrocution way back on 4 September 2009. Since then, the family members waged a prolonged battle against bureaucratic red tape as TPCODOL and local municipal administration shied away from compensating the bereaved family.

“The victim died in 2009 and for the last 16 years, petitioners are deprived of the benefit of ex gratia. It is the view of this Court that the deceased died because of negligence on the part of the TPCODL. Accordingly, while holding so, this Court directs Opp. Party No. 2 (TPDOCL) to pay the compensation amount in the shape of ex-gratia to the tune of Rs.lakh along with interest @ 6% all through from 4 September 2009 within six weeks, the Single Bench of Justice Biraja Prasanna Satapathy ruled.
