A key accused in the 2023 Tamil Nadu Raj Bhavan petrol bomb blast case was on Wednesday convicted and sentenced to a total of 10 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) by the Special Court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Poonamallee, Chennai.

Vinoth alias Karukka Vinoth has been sentenced to 7, 3 and 2 years respectively under sections 124, 379 and 453 of IPC. In addition, he has been sentenced to 5 years under section of 506(ii) of IPC, 10 years each under sections 3(a)(b), 4(B)(i) and 5(a)(b) of the Explosive Substances Act, besides 3 years under the Tamil Nadu Property (Prevention of Damages and Loss) Act. All these sentences will run concurrently for a maximum of 10 years of RI. The accused also faces a fine of Rs 5,000, with 6 months of additional sentence in the event of default in payment.

The accused had hurled two petrol bombs at the Raj Bhavan Gate-I on 25th October 2023, resulting in an explosion and damage to government property. NIA, which took over the investigation from the local police on the directives of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, submitted its final report to the NIA Special Court on 19th January 2024 after a thorough probe.
