The nomination process for the Ghatshila Assembly bypoll gained momentum on Friday as both major contenders, BJP’s Babulal Soren and JMM’s Somesh Chandra Soren, filed their papers before the Returning Officer. The by-election, scheduled for November 11, has emerged as a prestige battle for both the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and the opposition BJP-led NDA.
Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Hemant Soren attended the nomination filing of Somesh Chandra Soren, the son of late minister and JMM stalwart Ramdas Soren. Accompanied by senior leaders including Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee president Keshav Mahto Kamlesh, the Chief Minister extended his best wishes to the young candidate, calling him “a committed and energetic leader who carries forward the legacy of Swargiya Ramdas Da.” In a message shared after the event, Hemant Soren said he was confident that the people of Ghatshila would once again bless the “teer-dhanush,” JMM’s election symbol.

Meanwhile, BJP candidate Babulal Soren, the son of former Chief Minister Champai Soren, also filed his nomination on Friday, accompanied by senior NDA leaders Babulal Marandi and AJSU Party chief Sudesh Mahto. Before the nomination, Babulal Soren offered prayers at his ancestral village Jilinggoda’s Jaher Sthan in Seraikela-Kharsawan district, where he performed traditional rituals in tribal attire. His symbolic gesture of visiting the sacred site was seen as an effort to reaffirm his connect with the tribal community that dominates the region.
The bypoll was necessitated by the untimely demise of Ramdas Soren, who represented JMM in the Assembly. The contest between Somesh and Babulal brings together two young leaders from prominent political families, both familiar with the region’s social and political landscape.
Ghatshila has a history of alternating loyalties. The seat went to the Congress in 2005, to JMM in 2009, to BJP in 2014, and back to JMM in the last two elections. In the 2024 Assembly polls, Ramdas Soren won with 98,356 votes, defeating Babulal Soren, who polled 75,910 votes.
The nomination day saw heavy deployment of security personnel and extensive barricading around the Ghatshila subdivision office. Supporters of both parties gathered in large numbers. Babulal Soren reached the venue leading a motorbike rally of party workers, while JMM workers carried the party flag and tribal symbols in a show of solidarity.
After filing his papers, Babulal Soren said the election “is being fought by a BJP worker for the people of Jharkhand,” expressing confidence about his chances. Former Chief Minister Champai Soren, who is overseeing his son’s campaign, said the state government “has failed to deliver on its promises,” while JDU MLA Saryu Rai added that the bypoll “is essential to remind the ruling coalition of accountability.”
