In a major announcement ahead of the upcoming Bihar Assembly Elections, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav Thursday declared that if the opposition Mahagathbandhan comes to power in the state, it will provide sarkari naukri to all families that do not have any member serving in a government job.

Calling it a youth-centric poll promise, Tejashwi said the Mahagathbandhan government will enact a law to fulfill the promise, assuring it will not turn out to be a fake commitment. He even set a timeline for enacting the Act within 20 days of coming to power and then giving government jobs to all families within 20 months.

“I make a historic and youth-centric announcement today… We will bring a new Act and provide jobs to all families without a government job. As soon as we form the government (in Bihar), this Act will be brought within 20 days and in 20 months there will be no family without a government job,” the RJD leader said.

He added: “We have studied this scientifically; we have data of all such families on the basis of our survey. If we are making this announcement, it is my pledge that we are doing only what is possible.”

The Bihar leader asserted that his promise will be fulfilled: “This is not jumlebaazi, we are not cheating anyone. Tejashwi does not need to give proof.”

Listing out key issues in the Bihar polls, Tejashwi said joblessness, social justice and economic upliftment will be key factors this time.

“This time, the people of Bihar want change and want that unemployment be uprooted. Besides social justice, we want to do economic justice too for the people of Bihar. Tejashwi ne jo kaha hai wo kiya hai, aur jo keh raha hai wo karega. It can be done, all you need is willpower,” he stated.

The big poll promise was made hours before a Congress panel meets Tejashwi to discuss seat sharing for the two-phased Bihar elections.

Seat-sharing discussions are currently underway within the opposition INDIA bloc as well as the ruling NDA.

The Mahagathbandhan in Bihar consists of the Congress, the RJD and Left parties, including CPI, CPI(ML). The National Democratic Alliance, on the other hand, includes the BJP, JD(U), LJP(RV), HAMS and others.

Voting is set to take place for the 243 Assembly seats on November 6 and 11, with results due on November 14 when the votes will be counted.
