The Himachal Pradesh government has announced its decision to introduce the CBSE curriculum in government senior secondary schools to raise academic standards and better prepare students for future challenges.

In the first phase, 100 Government Senior Secondary Schools will be affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) starting from the next academic session.

An official spokesperson stated that this initiative will foster healthy competition between schools affiliated with the Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education and those under CBSE, motivating both students and teachers to improve performance.

At least one CBSE-affiliated school will be opened in every assembly constituency to ensure students across the state have access to quality education under the CBSE system at an affordable cost, the spokesperson added.

The CBSE curriculum is nationally benchmarked and widely recognized, particularly for national-level competitive examinations. The move is expected to enhance the academic competitiveness of Himachali students, broaden opportunities for higher education and professional careers, and equip them to meet 21st-century challenges.

To implement the reform, a separate sub-cadre will be created for these schools. Serving teachers will have the option to join the CBSE sub-cadre. Principals, teachers, and non-teaching staff will be selected on merit, considering academic performance, co-curricular involvement, and other relevant factors.

A Performance-Based Incentive Scheme—both monetary and non-monetary—will also be introduced to motivate staff.

Under the guidance of Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the government aims to build inclusive learning environments and create model institutions.

“These CBSE-affiliated government schools will function as day-boarding institutions, focusing not only on academics but also on nutrition, sports, arts, skilling, remedial teaching, counseling, career guidance, mentoring, and coaching. Additional posts will be created wherever necessary to strengthen these initiatives,” the spokesperson stated.
