Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron, discussing efforts to secure an early end to the conflict in Ukraine.
Taking to X, PM Modi said, “Had a very good conversation with President Macron. We reviewed and positively assessed the progress in bilateral cooperation in various areas. Exchanged views on international and regional issues, including efforts to bring an early end to the conflict in Ukraine. The India-France Strategic Partnership will continue to play a key role in fostering global peace and stability.”
Meanwhile, Macron took to X to describe his phone interaction with PM Modi. He said, “French President Emmanuel Macron posts, ‘I just spoke with Prime Minister Modi. I presented to him the outcome of the work we carried out with President Zelensky and our partners from the Coalition of the Willing this Thursday in Paris. India and France share the same commitment to a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. Strengthened by our friendship and strategic partnership, we will continue to move forward together to pave the way toward peace.”
Earlier on August 21, PM Modi spoke to Macron and described it as a “good conversation”. He stated that they have exchanged views on efforts for peaceful resolution of conflicts in Ukraine and in West Asia. He added that their conversation reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthen the India-France partnership.
As per media reports, Macron in a recent interview described Vladimir Putin remains a serious threat. He termed Putin as “a predator, an ogre at our gates” and said Europe must not be naïve about Russia’s ambitions.
Macron highlighted that calls for a quick peace deal could be counterproductive, warning that a rushed settlement might reward aggression and undermine international security. He stressed that lasting peace can only be achieved through steadfast resistance and by safeguarding Ukraine’s sovereignty.
Meanwhile, PM Modi underscored the need for dialogue and diplomacy. In August, PM Modi, during conversations with Putin and Macron, had stated that India had repeatedly called for a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict and supports all endeavors in this regard.
As per media reports, India is poised to formally launch a high-profile collaboration with France to jointly develop a next-generation jet engine for its indigenous fifth-generation stealth fighter and other advanced platforms, reinforcing the growing strategic ties between the two nations.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is preparing to seek clearance from the Cabinet Committee on Security for this ambitious initiative with French aerospace giant Safran. The project will involve full technology transfer, enabling both countries to collaboratively design, develop, test, certify, and manufacture the new 120-kilonewton engines entirely within India, as per media reports.
