In a sharp reaction to Narendra Modi’s fulminations against Congress and the RJD over a viral video of abusive remarks against his mother, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav reminded the prime minister of the derogatory remarks he made in the past targeting women politicians from the Opposition.

Accusing the BJP of attempting to politicise the issue, the RJD leader called it a party of double standards. “They are enacting a drama to divert public attention from the vote theft allegation against them,” he contended.

“A mother is a mother, regardless of whose mother she is. The word ‘mother’ itself brings peace to one’s heart. Even the voiceless have mothers. Using derogatory language for someone’s mother is not part of our values,” he said.

He recounted how “Modi ji himself made the ‘Rs 50-crore girlfriend’ comment” while campaigning for Prajwal Revanna, used indecent language against Sonia Gandhi, and even questioned Nitish Kumar’s DNA. “In the assembly, BJP MLAs hurled mother-sister abuses at me and my family. Someone, who made obscene comments about our spokesperson Sarika Paswan, was honoured and inducted into the BJP. Why was the prime minister silent then,” he asked.

Questioning the genuineness of Modi’s emotional outburst over the hurt, he said, “The prime minister, who was seen laughing while abroad, suddenly started crying after landing in India.”

The leader of the Opposition in the assembly said the people of Bihar and the country understand it very well. This artificial politics won’t work anymore. “The truth is the BJP is scared because the Voter Adhikar Yatra received massive public support,” he added.
