The Uttar Pradesh government has taken a big initiative to preserve the heroic saga of Gorkha soldiers who have the passion to sacrifice everything for the honor and pride of the country. Under this, the state’s culture department is going to build a grand museum here, along with beautifying the Gorkha War Memorial located in Gorkha Recruitment Depot (GRD) Gorakhpur of Gorkha Regiment.

Its foundation stone is going to be laid on September 4 by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan.

It is noteworthy that this will be the first museum of the Gorkha Regiment to be built for the general public to see. In this way, common people will be able to come face to face with the story of Gorkha warriors who have made a special identity for their bravery in the country and abroad.

C&DS Unit 42 of Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam has been selected as the implementing agency for the beautification of the Gorkha War Memorial and construction of the museum. The beautification of the memorial and the construction of the museum will cost over Rs 44 crore. Under this, museum, toilet block, ticket counter, renovation of the current building, water body, boundary wall, lift, etc. will be constructed. Apart from this, there will also be arrangements for a light and sound show, a 7D theater, mural painting, etc.

Gorkha soldiers are famous for their special war skills in the Indian Army. From the British period till now, Gorkha soldiers have received more than 2700 bravery awards in the Indian Army. Gorkha soldiers made a significant contribution in the First and Second World Wars. After the independence of the country, Gorkha soldiers have played an incomparable role in war as well as peace missions. At present, about 40000 Gorkha soldiers are serving the nation through the Indian Army.

Gorkha Recruitment Depot Gorakhpur, established in 1866, is the oldest recruitment depot. The war memorial that is here now was established in 1925 in memory of the contribution of Gorkha soldiers in the First World War. So far, bronze statues of eight such warriors have been installed in this memorial, who displayed unparalleled bravery during the war and received notable awards.

Among these, the statues of Field Marshal Manekshaw, Param Vir Chakra winner Captain GS Salaria, Lieutenant Colonel Dhan Singh Thapa, Captain 4 Manoj Pandey, Ashok Chakra winner Lieutenant Colonel JR Chitnis, Lieutenant Puneet Nath Dutt, Major Man Bahadur Rai and Nayak Nar Bahadur have been installed.
