Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday inaugurated the construction of the Anakkampoyil-Kalladi-Meppadi twin tunnel road, a key infrastructure project for the development of the Malabar region, at a function held at the Anakkampoyil St. Mary’s school ground.

Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister said the project was included in the LDF’s 2021 election manifesto under its road development promises and once completed,it will resolve traffic congestion on the Wayanad ghat road.

The tunnel will be Kerala’s longest and the third longest twin- tube road tunnel in India. Out of a 8.73 km project length, 8.11 km will be twin tunnels. The Rs 5-crore project is expected to be completed in four years and will remarkably reduce travel hardships in Wayanad.The Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) is the implementing agency .

The tunnel will feature modern safety systems, including ventilation, firefighting units, CCTV, traffic signals and emergency call points.
