Heavy rains batter Mumbai for the second straight day, forcing BMC to shut schools, colleges, and offices, as the IMD issues a red alert. Widespread waterlogging disrupts traffic and flights, with Indigo issuing a travel advisory.

Heavy rain lashed Mumbai on Tuesday triggering waterlogging and traffic snarls. For the second day in a row, Mumbai remains under a red alert, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announcing a holiday for all schools and colleges across the city and suburbs.

Since early Monday, relentless monsoon rains have lashed the city, with over 500 mm of rainfall in just 84 hours. The heavy downpour has led to severe waterlogging in several localities, including Chembur, Dadar, Hindmata, Andheri, and King’s Circle, disrupting normal life and once again highlighting concerns over Mumbai’s flood preparedness.

Heavy rains trigger severe waterlogging in Mumbai
Continuous heavy rainfall on Tuesday led to severe waterlogging across several parts of Mumbai, with knee-deep water reported in low-lying areas.

Commuters faced major inconvenience as visuals from outside Kurla railway station showed inundated roads, disrupted traffic, and stranded passengers struggling to wade through flooded streets. Waterlogging was witnessed in Dadar- Hindmata area also.

5-6 people lost lives in Hasnal village due to heavy rainfall

Heavy rainfall in Nanded’s Mukhed taluka caused flooding in four villages. SDRF rescued around 300 people.

However, 5-6 people lost their lives in Hasnad village. Their bodies have been recovered.

Offices to remain shut 

Amid continuous heavy rainfall in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), in its capacity as the District Disaster Management Authority, has ordered the closure of all government, semi-government, and BMC offices within its limits for the day, except those providing essential services.

The civic body has also appealed to private offices and establishments across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region to allow employees to work from home wherever feasible and to avoid non-essential travel.

BMC announces schools, colleges across Mumbai to remain shut today 

With the city reeling under heavy rains and waterlogging, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced on Monday evening that all schools and colleges across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, including the city and suburbs, will remain shut on Tuesday, August 19.

IMD issues red alert warning of extremely heavy rainfall 

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, warning of extremely heavy rainfall in isolated pockets. According to the regional weather centre’s nowcast issued at 6:30 am, the alert will stay in place until 10 am, with forecasts of very heavy showers across the city.

Indigo issues travel advisory amid waterlogging 

Indigo Airlines issued a travel advisory for travelers going to and from from the airport.
The airline tweeted, “With Mumbai drenched in heavy showers, several routes to the airport are witnessing waterlogging and sluggish traffic. This has, in turn, led to operational challenges, with delays in both departures and arrivals and we truly regret the inconvenience this may cause…”
