Ankush Narang, LoP in MCD, alleges Delhi Mayor staging photo ops, claiming AAP’s work

Leader of Opposition (LoP) Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Ankush Narang, on Friday said that the BJP is staging a publicity stunt to take credit for welfare work done under the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government.

AAP leaders made the remarks ahead of a public event on August 11, where Delhi BJP Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh will hand over money from the Teachers’ Welfare Fund to families of deceased MCD teachers. Narang also noted that the Mayor will distribute reappointment letters to employees who had already received jobs on compassionate grounds during the AAP government’s tenure.

Speaking at a press conference, Narang said, “BJP doesn’t know how to govern or get work done. All they know is how to convert someone else’s work into photo ops.”

He elaborated on the issue of pending payments and irregularities in remunerations to the families of deceased MCD officials, noting that these deaths occurred between 2016 and 2020, when the MCD was under the BJP rule. Despite annual deductions from teachers’ salaries, he said, the compensation was not paid to the families.

Narang also pointed out discrepancies in the amount deducted across divisions: in the South MCD, Rs 1,000 was taken annually, while in the East and North MCDs, the deduction was Rs 500. The compensation amounts also varied—Rs 7 lakh in the South and Rs 5 lakh in the East and North.

He claimed that the AAP government had standardised the system and said, “When the AAP government came to power in 2022, we unified and reformed the fund. Yet the cases pending from 2016 to 2024 have remained unresolved under the BJP’s MCD. Now they’re giving the money with tamasha and noise to show off.”
