The Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s (MCD) monthly meeting descended into chaos on Thursday as Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillors staged a protest inside the House, wearing black masks to condemn the city’s worsening air quality and alleged inaction by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led administration.
Led by Leader of Opposition (LoP) Ankush Narang, AAP members raised slogans of “Abki Baar, AQI 400 Paar”, accusing the BJP government of neglecting Delhi’s escalating pollution crisis.

“Despite a so-called ‘four-engine’ government, residents of Delhi are forced to breathe toxic air,” Narang said, adding that children and the elderly were falling ill while authorities “sit silent.”
According to Narang, air quality in several parts of Delhi including the Mayor’s own ward, Timarpur has crossed the ‘severe’ category, with AQI levels exceeding 700.
“Every Delhiite is inhaling pollution equivalent to smoking 15.5 cigarettes a day,” he claimed, adding that “three out of every four families are battling pollution-related illnesses.”
The LoP accused Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh of evading accountability after adjourning the session instead of holding a discussion on the crisis.
“When the Aam Aadmi Party sought a debate on this life-threatening issue, the Mayor chose to run away. Is this how a responsible government behaves?” Narang asked.
He further alleged that the BJP-led administration was manipulating pollution data.
“Water is sprayed only near AQI monitors to fake cleaner readings. This is not governance; it’s deception,” he said. Narang added that when the AAP controlled the MCD, sprinklers operated daily across Delhi, but now “even those are missing.”
Demanding immediate accountability, Narang called for the Mayor’s resignation, saying, “A Mayor who cannot keep his own ward clean has no moral right to stay in office.”
He also attacked Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, accusing her of betraying citizens with “false promises” on pollution control, waterlogging, and financial aid for women.
“Delhi is choking,” Narang warned. “And the BJP’s four engines have failed.”
