Mayawati slams US tariffs, urges govt to protect farmers and small industries

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati Thursday, strongly criticised the newly imposed trade tariffs by the United States and urged the Indian government to protect national interests, particularly those of farmers and small businesses.

Addressing the issue here, she expressed concern over US President Donald Trump’s decision to impose a 25 per cent duty on Indian imports starting August 1 and a penalty on oil imports from Russia.

Despite the US being described as a ‘friendly’ nation, Mayawati emphasised that such economic pressures should be met with resilience and transformed into opportunities for self-reliance. She called on the central government to honour its assurance that no section, especially small and medium enterprises and the agricultural sector, will be adversely affected.
