In view of the Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 tourists were targeted by Pakistani terrorists, the Indian Army has rolled out ‘Operation SHIVA 2025’ in close coordination with the civil administration and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs). This annual security operation – one of the most intense peacetime deployments in the country – comes amid heightened threats from Pakistan-backed terror proxies following Operation Sindoor, a defence spokesman said.

Continuous UAV missions and live drone feeds are monitoring both Yatra routes and the Holy Cave, offering real-time situational awareness.

Army helicopters remain on standby for any medical or operational emergencies along the route.
This year’s operation features an expansive deployment of over 8,500 troops, backed by cutting-edge technology, robust logistical support, and real-time intelligence networks. The security grid spans both the Pahalgam and Baltal pilgrimage routes, fortifying vulnerable corridors with prophylactic deployments, counter-terror measures, and comprehensive disaster response mechanisms.
Engineer Task Forces have been deployed for bridge construction, track repair, widening, and disaster mitigation efforts. Over 150 doctors and medical staff have been stationed across nine Medical Aid Posts, two Advanced Dressing Stations, a 100-bed field hospital, and 26 oxygen booths supported by 200,000 litres of oxygen have been positioned.
Signal companies were ensuring uninterrupted communication, while EME detachments and Bomb Disposal Squads provide critical technical and security support.
Adequate rations for 25,000 pilgrims, quick reaction teams (QRTs), tent cities, water points, and heavy earth-moving equipment including bulldozers and excavators have been pre-positioned.
The Indian Army has also instituted live convoy tracking from Jammu to the Holy Cave using high-resolution PTZ cameras, drones, and satellite-linked feeds. This technological edge enables swift threat identification and response while maintaining seamless multi-agency coordination.
Operation SHIVA 2025 underscores the Army’s unwavering commitment to protecting the sanctity and security of the sacred Yatra. By blending traditional operational experience with modern technology and inter-agency cooperation, the Indian Army aims to ensure a safe, seamless, and spiritually enriching pilgrimage for lakhs of devotees undertaking this revered Himalayan journey, the spokesman added.
