The prestigious award is named after the Welwitschia Mirabilis, a unique and ancient desert plant endemic to Namibia, symbolizing resilience, longevity, and the enduring spirit of the Namibian people. This admired award is a testament to the strong and growing relationship between India and Namibia.

Established in 1995, shortly after Namibia gained independence in 1990, the Order of the Most Ancient Welwitschia Mirabilis is bestowed upon individuals who have made significant contributions to the country, showcasing exceptional leadership and dedication.

This award marks the 27th recognition of PM Modi’s efforts, with the fourth award during his ongoing tour. The conferment highlights his commitment to fostering strong bilateral relations and cooperation between India and Namibia.
Modi was conferred with Brazil’s highest honour, the Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross, during his recent visit to the Lastin American nation.
The purpose of the civilian honour, which symbolises resilience, longevity, and the enduring spirit of the Namibian people, is conferred to recognize distinguished service and leadership.
