Oscars 2018: Anupam Kher’s ‘The Big Sick’, Ali Fazal’s ‘Victoria & Abdul’ gets nominated

The nominations for the Oscars 2018 unveiled online at 6:50 pm on 23 January. The audience can view the nominations live as Tiffany Haddish and actor Andy Serkis host the event from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Los Angeles. As revealed earlier, Priyanka Chopra, Michelle Rodriguez, Rebel Wilson, Michelle Yeoh and Rosario Dawson will be part of the pre-recorded announcement of the nominations. The nominations for the 90th Academy Awards were announced here on Tuesday.

An Indian actor’s film has made it to the Oscar nominations list. Actor Ali Fazal-starrer Victoria & Abdul, featuring Judi Dench in the key role, is in contention to win an Oscar in two categories — Best Costume Design and Make-up and Hairstyling. Anupam Kher starrer “The Big Sick” stands a chance to win in one category at the 90th Academy Awards

Other nominees in the Costume Design category are: “Beauty and the Beast”, “Darkest Hour”, “Phantom Thread” and The Shape of Water. In the Make-up and Hair category, the film is in contention with Darkest Hour and Wonder.

Helmed by Stephen Frears, Victoria & Abdul is based on a novel by Shrabani Basu. It revolves around the relationship shared by Queen Victoria and Abdul, who was a munshi in her government. It also shows his journey on how he became one of the most powerful figures on the court. The role of the queen is played by Dench and Abdul is essayed by Ali.

The Oscar awards ceremony will be held here on March 4.
