Ali Fazal is getting a lot of love for his work in ‘Raakh’, the new streaming series that just dropped. With viewers responding so well to his role, the actor recently opened up about one particular scene that’s been striking a chord — and what was going through his mind while shooting it.

Talking to IANS after the show released, Ali brought up a moment in the thriller where his character gets pulled off the investigation by his seniors. He said it reminded him of something almost everyone’s been through — getting caught breaking a rule at school and being made to sit out as punishment.

Playing it real, not just dramatic

Ali said his priority was staying honest to the script while letting the emotion build naturally instead of forcing it. His character is a cop who’s completely consumed by the case — obsessed, really — and willing to bend rules to get results.

He does what it takes to keep the investigation moving, even if that means lying or manipulating people along the way. But eventually, all of that catches up with him. Ali compared it to a kid who tries to cut corners, gets caught, and then has to face the consequences — sitting on the sidelines while everyone else moves on.

“He keeps missing them by inches”

For Ali, the emotion at the core of this character is frustration — plain and simple. His character keeps getting close to the criminals, only to lose them at the last second, again and again.

He explained that this is the point in the story where all the pieces are finally falling into place, which only makes the pressure worse. That’s where the restlessness in his performance comes from — the sense that he’s this close, right before he’s forced to step back.

Desperation, he said, was really the driving thought behind how he played the scene — the feeling of being on the verge of cracking the case, only to have it taken away.

A period thriller rooted in the 1970s

In ‘Raakh’, Ali plays the lead investigator on the brutal murder of two children. Set in the late 1970s, the show follows a case that sends shockwaves through the entire country and turns into a massive, nationwide manhunt. At its heart, it’s about the toll this kind of work takes — professionally and emotionally — on the officers chasing justice.

Based on a real, chilling case

While ‘Raakh’ is fictional, it draws heavily from the infamous Ranga-Billa case — the real-life kidnapping and murder of two siblings that shocked the nation and remains one of the most talked-about criminal cases in Indian history.

The series also stars Sonali Bendre, Aamir Bhashir, Ramandeep Yadav, Prosit Roy, Anusha Nandkumar, and Sandeep Sanket. The cast spoke to IANS recently as the show hit screens.

‘Raakh’ is now streaming on Prime Video.
