Indian skipper Virat Kohli could become the first ever captain in World Cup history to score five successive scores of fifty runs or more.

He right now has four back to back fifty scores in the ongoing Cricket World Cup 2019 and is the joint record holder alongside former South African captain Graeme Smith and present Australian captain Aaron Finch.

Kohli has been steady in the competition in England and has scored fifties against Australia, Pakistan, Afghanistan and West Indies. Despite the fact that he hasn’t crossed the three-figure mark yet, his contributions have been crucial in enabling India’s unbeaten run.

He was pronounced Man of the Match in India’s effortless win over the West Indies in Manchester on Thursday. Kohli has scores of 72, 67, 77 and 82 in his last four innings.

Kohli is tied with former South African captain Graeme Smith who had made the scores (67, 91, 74, 59) in the 2007 edition of the World Cup . Finch also has been in a good nick and has three half-centuries and a couple of hundreds against his name in this World Cup.

Finch is only four runs behind opening partner David Warner who is leading the run scorers board with 500 runs on the board. Kohli finds himself ninth on that list, having accumulated as many as 316 runs in five innings.

Finch can break Smith’s record even before Kohli given that Australia are set to play New Zealand a day before India play their next match against England.

While Smith’s record might be in danger, Finch and Kohli in good form will be imperative for their respective teams ahead of the semi-finals.

However, if Finch fails to move beyond fifty on Saturday, Kohli will get his opportunity to break Smith’s record on Sunday in India’s epic contest against England at Edgbaston.

Indian fans would be hoping that Kohli breaks this record en-route to India’s win over hosts England.
